Mike Hopkins is in his thirty first year in further education. In 2004 he became a Senior Civil Servant in Wales, responsible for planning and funding further and higher education, and in July 2010, returned to the sector as Principal and Chief Executive of Middlesbrough College.
Since arriving at Middlesbrough, the College has begun to play a key role in helping inform and shape post 16 education policy. The College is a founder member of the ‘Gazelle’ group which consists of 20 colleges committed to ‘entrepreneurship as a strategic deliverer for change in the education sector’. Mike is Chairman of the Principals Professional Council and also is a member of a number of regional and national committees of the Association of Colleges. In 2011 he was appointed as Co-Chairman of the 14-16 FE College direct enrolment implementation group, advising Ministers and officials on the means by which FE Colleges could enrol 14 year olds directly. The recommendations were accepted by Ministers and direct enrolment begins in September 2013.
In September 2013, Mike became Chief Executive of a Federation between Gateshead College and Middlesbrough College.
Mike is passionate about the potential of the further education sector to make a profound contribution to ensuring the creation of jobs, opportunities and prosperity for employers and students, and believes that colleges have a major role to play in ensuring a buoyant and sustainable economy as well communities at ease with themselves.
